Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

DOMS. DOMS is a bitch…as everyone who did Monday’s WOD knows. I’m still using the damn handicapped stall in the bathroom.
Just FYI – this is normal. It’s a response to the amount of work you did, and is an adaptation that will build strength and stamina. Yay? Yes? No? I know right now you’re more than likely cursing me, particularly if you drive a car with a manual transmission.

There’s really not much you can do when in the throes of DOMS except keep moving – use an active recovery and don’t let yourself get stiff. The blood flow in the affected regions will help the soreness diminish. Also, NSAIDs will really help with this. Follow the prescribed amount though, don’t go eating like nine Aleve and expect to feel better. That ain’t gonna work.

Now, know the difference between DOMS and something more serious (Rhabdo). Rhabdo is agony and swelling and brown urine and PAIN. DOMS just sucks. You can still function, your pee is normal, and life isn’t very fun, but it’s manageable. If we’re talking about the former you need to go to the ER and then call me and let me know what’s going on. If it’s the latter – well…just be sure to use the safety rails when getting off the toilet.
